TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Foundation for Excellence in Education released the following statement on yesterday’s ruling by Florida’s 4th District Court of Appeal, upholding the Florida State Board of Education’s constitutional authority to review and approve charter school applications on appeal.
“Charter schools play an important role in Florida’s school choice landscape, providing high quality educational options for more than 270,000 students and their parents.
“We commend Florida’s 4th District Court of Appeal for ensuring that the Florida State Board of Education has the authority to continue to review appeals from charter school operators denied approval at the local level.
“This ruling is a signal to high-impact charter providers that Florida puts students, and their need for educational choice, first.”
In January 2016, the Foundation for Excellence in Education joined the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and other groups in filing an amicus brief asking the court to affirm that the Florida State Board of Education has the constitutional authority to review appeals when charter school applications are denied by local boards.
