Helping Louisiana Students Reach Their Potential

Dear Friend,

ExcelinEd believes all children have a natural love for learning. This is why we work with states to build an education system that focuses on the success of each and every child, regardless of circumstance. Louisiana is one such state that is achieving real results with bold education reform policies and steadfast leadership.

This week, the Louisiana Department of Education announced that students improved performance in English language arts, math and science at every grade level from 2015 to 2016. Louisiana Superintendent John White, a nationally recognized innovator and education expert, has pushed the state to implement higher academic standards over the past four years, believing that schools and students would rise to meet these new challenges. And they did.

Louisiana’s four-year high school graduation rate increased for a fifth consecutive year in 2015, reaching an all-time high of 77.5 percent for the class graduating that year. Also, Louisiana high school students earned 845 more qualifying scores on Advanced Placement® exams in 2016 than in 2015, an 11 percent increase. Compared to 2012, the number of qualifying scores earned annually has more than doubled!

Additionally, Superintendent White’s Jump Start Program brings together teams of education, economic, workforce, industry and government leaders to help high school students earn career and technical education certifications in high-wage jobs. Since the start of the program two years ago, 11 regional teams have helped create 47 different graduation pathways for students to earn a high school diploma along with a recognized, industry-based certification in a high-wage, high-demand field.

We know these results do not happen in a vacuum. These improvements happen because Superintendent White and his team, along with Louisiana’s educators, believe in the potential of Louisiana’s students and are taking the necessary steps to help every student reach that potential. From raising academic standards and expanding course choice to innovating new programs that prepare students for college and career, Superintendent White and his team have revolutionized the Louisiana education system. Louisiana students are empowered to reach higher as a result of these forward-thinking efforts.

Sincerely,
