Statement from Patricia Levesque, ExcelinEd CEO, on final action by the North Carolina Legislature on the state budget, which includes major new and expanded parental choice options, college and career readiness enhancements, K-3 reading improvements, and stronger, more transparent school accountability.
“With final approval of the two-year budget, major gains have been made toward creating opportunities for North Carolina students to succeed in school and beyond. Building on the success of current Tar Heel parental choice programs, North Carolina will soon become the sixth state to offer Education Savings Accounts. Now parents of students with special needs will have power to select the courses, schools or programs that are best for their child. North Carolina families will also receive more accurate, transparent and timely information on whether and how schools are helping their children succeed.
“I would like to thank Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Tim Moore for standing up for students in their action this week. I also thank our partners the Civitas Institute, NorthCarolinaCAN and Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina (PEFNC) for their leadership in supporting parental choice, and Business for Educational Success and Transformation (BEST NC) and the North Carolina Chamber for their support of school accountability and preparing students for college and careers.”
