#EIE19: Distinguished Panel to Reflect on Lasting Impact of Brown v. Board Decision

Dear Friend,

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which changed the course of education in America.

ExcelinEd is excited to welcome a distinguished panel of education leaders to the National Summit on Education Reform to reflect on the ruling’s lasting impact, our nation’s progress over the past six decades and, most especially, the hard work still ahead to advance educational equity for each and every child.

The panel includes Dr. Michel Lomax, President and CEO of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest private provider of scholarships and other educational support to African American students and a leading advocate of college readiness. Under his leadership, UNCF has helped more than 110,000 students earn college degrees and launch careers. I’m looking forward to his insights on how policymakers and communities can better prepare minority students to not only graduate high school, but also achieve success in college and career.

I hope you will join us in San Diego for #EIE19 to hear from these inspiring speakers.
Sincerely,

Lizzette Gonzalez Reynolds

ExcelinEd Vice President of Policy

Our Q&A with Dr. Michael Lomax

ExcelinEd: What needs to be done in K-12 education to better prepare minority students for success in college and career?

ML: College and career readiness is a major focus for education reform. One of the biggest challenges that must be addressed is the disparity in preparation for certain racial and ethnic groups and low-income and first-generation college students. African American students are far less likely to be college ready than their peers. In fact, they are more likely to enroll in remedial education courses when they enter college. UNCF teamed up with the ACT to release a study specific to college and career readiness and along with the study, we’ve included recommendations on how we can address the overwhelming college readiness gap.
