Location: Close proximity to state capitals in the southwestern and midwestern United States (Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa)

Job Summary

The Regional Advocacy Director promotes the Foundation’s education reform policy agenda with state policymakers and in-state reform partners. The Director is responsible for executive and legislative branch outreach, tracking executive and legislative action and communicating regularly with lawmakers, policymakers and state advocates to educate and advance the Foundation’s reform agenda. The Regional Advocacy Director works to build relationships and coalitions with state leaders and in-state partner organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Regional Advocacy Director supports state leaders and local advocates on introducing, adopting or protecting policies that transform education for the 21st century.

  • Covers State Legislative Sessions, State Board of Education meetings and other governmental meetings that impact the Foundation’s policy agenda.
  • Conducts outreach to the legislative and executive branches within certain southwestern and midwestern states.
  • Tracks legislation and executive action, reviews policy proposals and supports policy implementation.
  • Builds partnerships with policymakers and in-state advocacy organizations to promote and advance the Foundation’s policy agenda.
  • Testifies on behalf of the Foundation at committee meetings, panels, conferences, and other venues.
  • Assists with communications strategies by developing and supplying facts for advocacy resources.
  • Contributes to the Foundation’s overall state advocacy strategy by developing annual action plans for southwestern states.
  • Undertakes other interim assignments, as necessary, which may include organizing or participating in state and national convenings, developing advocacy resources and identifying scholars for the National Summit on Education Reform.

  • Ability to differentiate between and appropriately manage 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 activities


The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least five years of experience working in the legislative or executive branch of government in public policy, advocacy, legislative bill drafting, tracking and analysis. A background in social science, political science, public administration, and/or an associated subject is desirable.
