Regional Advocacy Associate

Position Available: Regional Advocacy Associate 

Reports to: National Director of Advocacy 

Category: Full-time, salaried, at-will employee 

Location: Phoenix, AZ; Denver, CO; Salt Lake City, UT 

Job Summary: 

The Regional Advocacy Associate serves as a member of the Advocacy Team and supports the work of Regional Advocacy Directors as they promote the Foundation’s education reform policy agenda with state policymakers and in-state reform partners across the country. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

The Advocacy Associate facilitates the work of Regional Advocacy Directors as they support state leaders and local advocates on introducing, adopting or protecting policies that transform education for the 21st century.  

  • Tracks priority and other legislationupdates the status of priority bills within the organizations’ bill tracking system. 
  • Tracks and timely reports on legislative committee meetings, session debates, State Board of Education meetings, executive actions, etc. relevant to the organization’s policy agenda and advocacy strategy.  
  • Communicates regularly with Regional Advocacy Directors regarding the status of education policy within assigned states to inform advocacy decisions and strategies. 
  • Communicates with state partners, including lawmakers, policymakers and local advocates, to assist in developing, advocating, adopting and implementing education policy as directed by the Regional Advocacy Directors. 
  • Coordinates across the organizations advocacy, policy and communications teams to provide resources and assistance to state policymakers and partners. 
  • Drafts talking points and summaries for state leaders, board of directors and executive management.  
  • Prepares briefing documents for staff and/or Board members as needed.  
  • Responds to inquiries related to policy and legislation from legislators, aides and the public. 
  • Tracks and updates team members on regional news relative to legislative happenings in assigned states.

  • Strong commitment to advocate for education reform policies 
  • General knowledge of education policy and state politics 
  • General understanding of political and legislative processes 
  • Ability to differentiate between 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) activities 
  • Ability to travel occasionally 


The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.  background in Social Science, Political Science, Public Administration, and/or an associated subject is desirable as well as experience working in the legislative or executive branch of government
