Innovation is, in part, a reminder that we should never stop looking for ways to improve. There are always better, more efficient solutions out there if we work together to find them. That’s why I’m proud to be a part of the ExcelinEd’s Innovation policy team. Through our work with policymakers and partners, we seek to empower states to improve outcomes for all students.

Books I’m Reading

During the summer, I always make it a point to reread some of my all-time literary favorites. Currently, that’s Flannery O’Connor’s Complete Short Stories—one of the best (if also darkest and sometimes bizarre) collections of the genre of all time.

With one of my children making the transition to college this fall, I’ve been interested in factors that can improve college-going and completion as well as graduates’ career options down the road. These include:

  • report by Burning Glass and Strada examining the impacts on “underemployment” on college graduates.

ExcelinEd Resource Highlight

With the recent passage of the reauthorized federal Perkins Act, state policymakers can take advantage of a range of new options for funding high-quality career and technical education programs. Before they make any plans, we would advocate they take stock what their existing programs provide in terms of offerings and outcomes. Our latest CTE playbook, Auditing a State Career and Technical Education Program for Quality, can help states understand whether their programs are both aligned to business and industry needs for middle- and higher-wage jobs and of sufficient quality to ensure continued career advancement over time.

As Innovation Policy Managing Director, Quentin oversees Personalized Learning, College and Career Pathways and Course Access policies at ExcelinEd. Previously, Quentin served as executive director of the college, career, and military preparation at the Texas Education Agency. He also held leadership positions with Amplify Education, an education consulting and technology firm, TNTP, and The Learning Institute. Quentin began his career as a high school English teacher. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Memphis.
