William E. Oberndorf began his investing career after receiving his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1978 and his B.A. from Williams College in 1975. Mr. Oberndorf has been a value investor for over 30 years in a broad range of businesses. He is Chairman of Oberndorf Enterprises, LLC, and is a co-founder of SPO Partners & Co., from which he retired in March, 2012.
Mr. Oberndorf has been involved in many non-profit activities and political causes for the past twenty years. He currently serves as chairman emeritus and board member of the Alliance for School Choice, an organization he co-founded that works nationwide to bring about K-12 education reform and expand school choice for low-income families. In addition, Mr. Oberndorf is chairman of The University of California San Francisco Foundation, a board member of the Foundation for Educational Excellence, and University School in Cleveland, Ohio. He is a former trustee of Williams College, the Stanford Graduate School of Business Trust, University High School in San Francisco, and the Thacher School in Ojai, California.
Mr. Oberndorf has been honored by the Black Alliance for Education Options (BAEO) and the Philanthropy Roundtable for his work in education reform. He is the 2010 recipient of the John T. Walton Champions for Education Choice Award.
