Louisiana Expands Public School Options for Families

Statement by Patricia Levesque, ExcelinEd CEO, on legislation to improve to Louisiana’s open enrollment policy, signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards. Currently, eligible Louisiana parents can cross district boundaries to enroll their children in any public school. When those requests are denied, however, parents have limited ability to appeal the decision.

“Louisiana took a great step forward in expanding public school options for all students regardless of where they live. Reducing bureaucratic hurdles in the open enrollment process will allow parents to choose where their child enrolls, instead of letting school districts make that decision for them.

“ExcelinEd thanks Governor John Bel Edwards, Representative Mark Wright and the Louisiana Federation for Children for putting the needs of Louisiana students first.”

House Bill 211, sponsored by Representative Mark Wright, improves Louisiana’s current open enrollment policy by adding the following provisions:
