The Foundation for Excellence in Education Joins Celebration of National Digital Learning Day: 02/01/2012

Tallahassee, FL – Today, students, parents, teachers, state leaders and education advocates from across the country are celebrating Digital Learning Day. This day recognizes the power of digital learning to improve student achievement and transform education for the 21st century. Governors, education chiefs, lawmakers and policymakers across the nation are marking this day by making a historic commitment to pioneer this game-changing reform, which is the catalyst for creating a student-centered, achievement-based education.

"A quality education can change a life, and digital learning has the power to ensure each and every student in America has access to a high quality education that prepares them for a lifetime of success," said former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, chair of the Foundation for Excellence in Education and co-chair of Digital Learning Now!. "Digital learning is the catalyst for transforming education. It provides teachers with the tools to customize instruction with precision, and it allows students to earn credit for what they learn rather than how much time they spend in the classroom.  These interactive and adaptive learning technologies can ensure that every student advances to the next level when they have mastered the necessary skills and material, not just when the school year ends.”

A decade ago, customizing education for every student was just a dream, but today’s technology allows students to learn in their own style, at their own pace, anytime and anywhere.  In 2010, the Foundation for Excellence in Education launched Digital Learning Now!, a national public awareness campaign that is building support for reforms to produce high quality digital learning.  The campaign’s 10 Elements of High Quality Digital Learning define the framework for a new paradigm in education, and the Roadmap for Reform: Digital Learning arms Governors, state education chiefs, lawmakers and policymakers with nuts-and-bolts policies to transition to a student-centered education that prepares students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in college and challenging careers.

States’ leaders must act today to transform education and provide every student with a rigorous, high-quality, customized education that will prepare them for success in college and their careers. The Foundation for Excellence in Education will continue working with states to transform education for the digital age.
