What You Can Do to Protect Nevada’s ESA Program

Parents face so many decisions when it comes to their children. They pick doctors and dentists and soccer coaches. They buy the vegetables their kids will refuse to eat and veto the TV shows their kids insist on watching. Parents are not perfect decision makers. But when it comes to children, they are the best decision makers.

Yet one of the most critical decisions involving children is denied to far too many parents. They control what their kids do before school and after school, but not where they go to school.

They have no choice.

Nevada rejected such an approach this summer when it became the first state to empower all public school parents with the right to choose their children’s schools. Now parents can direct a portion of the state funds that would have been spent on their child in a traditional public school into an education savings account. They then can decide how to spend those funds to meet their child’s educational needs.

This option is available to more than 450,000 Nevada children through the Nevada Universal Education Savings Account (ESA) Program. Applications are available now.

You might think an organization that professes to champion individual liberties for each person might celebrate this newfound freedom granted to each parent. But instead, the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit to block the program and take decisions away from Nevada parents.

In response, the Foundation for Excellence in Education has launched DropTheSuitNV.org to help ensure Nevada parents can choose the best education for their children.

Nevada families deserve better than to be placed in the crosshairs of the ACLU’s misguided political agenda. We encourage all Nevadans to sign the petition telling the ACLU to Drop The Suit!

The new website also contains comprehensive and valuable information on Nevada’s Universal ESA Program, including facts on how to apply.
